Naked Statistics: Stripping the Dread from the Data

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Naked_StatisticsIn Naked Statistics, author Charles Wheelan strives to impart the intuitions behind foundational statistical concepts such as correlation, regression and inference without with any complex formulas and algorithms.  Although targeted toward “those who slept through Stats 101,” the book may be of interest to more accomplished “dataphiles.” I greatly appreciate books like this because they shed light on the mysteries of Big Data and data science for a general audience. The reader gains insight into the world of statistics through a wealth of anecdotes and stories that illustrate statistical thinking, including tales of Schlitz Beer marketers leveraging basic probability, an International Sausage Festival illuminating the tenets of the central limit theorem, and the infamous Monte Hall Problem. Fascinating read! Wheelan, former correspondent for The Economist, current columnist for Yahoo!, and professor at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, also wrote the bestselling 2010 book Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science.
