In this video, IBM researchers describe how the company harnessed unused compute cycles throughout the company. Using the same technology, Harvard’s Clean Energy Project harnessed the power of the World Community Grid.

The theory-driven research effort uses an automated computational framework to study candidate structures. A computational study of molecular materials combining the scale and level of theory found in the CEP is unprecedented. The 400 tetrabytes of data generated is stored in the Clean Energy Project (CEP) Database, which is freely available to the public.

As of June 2013, more than 600,000 users have signed up 2,300,000 computers to the various WCG projects.
