Twitter Data Grants

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Twitter_predictTwitter recently introduced a pilot project called Twitter Data Grants through which a handful of research institutions are given access to the company’s public and historical data.

More than 500 million Tweets a day are generated by the Twitter microblogging service. Such an expansive set of data can allow data scientists to glean insights and learn about a variety of topics, from health-related information such as when and where the flu may hit to global events like ringing in the new year. To date, however, researchers outside the company have found it challenging to access Twitter’s public, historical data in order to tackle big questions. The new Data Grants program aims to change that by connecting research institutions and academics with the data they need.

In order to participate, you need to submit a proposal here no later than March 15th. For this initial pilot, Twitter is selecting a small number of proposals to receive data sets at no charge. To do this, the company is using Gnip, one of Twitter’s certified data reseller partners. They are working with Twitter to give selected institutions free and easy access to Twitter data sets. In addition to the data, they are also be offering opportunities for the selected institutions to collaborate with Twitter engineers and researchers.
