datastax_logo_rgbDataStax, a leading provider of database software for cloud applications, announced the release of DataStax Enterprise (DSE) 5.0 and DataStax OpsCenter 6.0, to provide enterprises a comprehensive and operationally simple data management layer. The unique, always-on architecture of DataStax Enterprise is based on Apache Cassandra™. DSE 5.0, including OpsCenter 6.0, and the recently announced DataStax Enterprise Graph, will be available for download on June 28, 2016 HERE.

Perspectives on the News

According to an independent study by Forrester Consulting, “Next-gen applications will require data that is always available, regardless of where that data is, the volume required, or the data’s complexity. The data may be distributed across many data silos and both structured and unstructured. Firms will need to rely on data technologies that can deliver high data performance and availability. Distributed databases deliver data with high availability and performance to power next-gen cloud applications. Cloud enables dynamic scale and elasticity to support any type of next-generation business application.”

ProtectWise helps organizations conduct proactive threat hunting on a scale that was previously untenable due to the volume of data being managed,” said Gene Stevens, Co-founder and CTO, ProtectWise. “With DataStax Enterprise’s scalability and built-in search features, we are able to process this vast amount of data. DSE 5.0’s advanced search capabilities offer faster search times on larger data sets along with stronger Spark jobs which make it easy to completely cover and unify a rapidly expanding attack surface that our customers experience across their enterprise, cloud and industrial control networks, all while simultaneously compressing the breach detection window and enabling proactive hunting and patrolling on these widely dispersed and often complex infrastructures.”

Multi-Model Database Delivering Real-Time Value at Epic Scale

DataStax Enterprise 5.0 offers a certified version of Cassandra 3.0 and advanced functionality designed to accelerate the creation of intelligent and compelling data-intensive applications. DSE delivers a full multi-model platform with support for tabular, key-value, JSON, and graph models along with built-in workload management that enables analytics, search, and in-memory operations within the same database. Additionally, DSE 5.0 is the only operational database able to scale linearly in excess of 1,000 nodes with no single point of failure and is capable of providing real-time active-everywhere replication across numerous datacenters and cloud environments.

The rise of cloud applications demand an entirely new approach to data management as they require zero downtime, epic scale, real-time intelligence, and data distribution across many datacenters and clouds – something that just can’t be done using relational database technology,” said Robin Schumacher, VP of Products, DataStax. “DataStax Enterprise 5.0 along with OpsCenter 6.0 simplifies life on DSE by streamlining the development, protection, management and monitoring of DSE so an organization can more quickly and easily bring cloud applications to market.”

DSE 5.0 is a comprehensive multi-model database solution capable of understanding data in real-time and includes:

  • DSE Graph: the only scalable real-time graph database built for cloud applications that need to manage complex data with many relationships. DSE Graph delivers continuous uptime along with predictable performance and scale for modern systems dealing with complex and constantly changing data, while remaining operationally simple to manage.
  • DSE Advanced Replication: specifically designed to support today’s IoT and retail applications that need to replicate data within hub-and-spoke and similar topologies.
  • Advanced server automation: simplifies data management via DSE Tiered Storage, which automatically moves data to its appropriate storage tier based on age, and DSE Multi-Instance, which makes it cost efficient and easy to run multiple copies of DSE on larger machines.
  • Advanced analytics and search: includes an updated version of Apache Spark™ to enable increased speed for streaming data, enhanced connectivity with external Spark clusters, and faster enterprise search operations with Apache Solr™.

Enterprise Database Management for Cloud Applications

DataStax OpsCenter 6.0 is the web-based visual management and monitoring solution for DSE and provides what’s needed to intelligently manage and monitor large scale, mission critical systems. OpsCenter has integrated functionality for monitoring, tuning, provisioning, backup and security management, and not only reduces operational and hardware costs but also dramatically increases overall operations productivity.

DataStax OpsCenter 6.0 enhancements include:

  • A new Lifecycle Management (LCM) component that delivers enterprise-class provisioning capabilities for creating and administering widely-distributed database clusters, whether on premise, in the cloud, or in hybrid public/private cloud environments.
  • Full management and monitoring support for DSE Graph.
  • Improved alerting including support for SNMP, which helps integrate OpsCenter with other infrastructure management systems.
  • Export of monitoring metrics to third party monitoring tools including Graphite.

Simplifying Development for Cloud Applications

The release of DSE 5.0 and OpsCenter 6.0 also includes DataStax Studio 1.0, a new web-based visual development tool to help developers visually interact with DSE Graph. DataStax Studio lets anyone easily write graph database queries and visualize graph data output in a variety of formats.

In addition, a new suite of enterprise drivers is being made available for all popular development languages (e.g., Java, Python, C#, C++, Ruby, Node.js, PHP), with every driver fully supporting each enterprise component of DSE’s multi-model platform. For example, a Java developer can use the single DSE Java driver to write secured CQL, DSE Analytics/Spark, DSE Search/Solr, and DSE Graph/Gremlin queries against a DSE cluster.
