Gartner’s 2014 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Bid-Data-2014.The Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies just hit the streets! This guide to the industry’s pulse is a good way to balance the hype with reality. As you’ll note in the chart below, big data is entering the Trough of Disillusionment. This is likely due to companies slowly figuring out that just collecting massive amounts of information does not automatically translate into business value. This is also evident by the beginning of the Peak of Inflated Expectations for data science. If companies are to derive value from big data, they will need the tools and professionals able to analyze and understand the patterns found within the data.

The question is whether data scientists and big data engineers should be worried about the future? Not a chance, in my opinion. The disciplines underlying big data and data science are not new. Computer science, mathematical statistics, probability theory, etc. have been around for a very long time, and business enterprises have used some semblance of these tools for decades. Will the hype disappear? Yes, hype always dissipates over time, but that doesn’t mean enterprises suddenly will stop using their data assets to drive revenue. Let’s all just sit back and enjoy the show!
