HP_Vertica_LogoHP has announced the general availability of HP Vertica for SQL on Hadoop, an analytics platform that enables customers to access and explore data residing in Hortonworks, MapR, Cloudera, Apache based data lakes, or any combination of these leading Hadoop distributions.

HP Vertica for SQL on Hadoop dramatically reduces the complexity of multiple data architectures with a proven query engine, backed by HP’s first-class support, service, and expertise. This new offering builds on a strong history of Hadoop integration technology to provide a seamless way for organizations to explore and exploit value in data that’s stored on the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS).

With up to 25,000 job postings updates, over 400,000 active postings and over 1,000,000 unique visitors on our site every day, there is tremendous potential insight in all that data,” said Robert Fehrmann, Data Architect at Snagajob. “HP Vertica for SQL on Hadoop combines the power, speed, and scalability of HP Vertica with the ease and effectiveness of Hadoop and gives us an incredibly robust analytics tool to help understand and act on our information assets.”

Combine Enterprise-Grade Analytics with Hadoop to Explore Data

Organizations are attracted to Hadoop to cost-effectively store large volumes of unstructured data in what is referred to as a “data lake.” However, exploring HDFS-based data to unearth value for analytic insight has proven challenging, to date.

By combining the proven Vertica SQL engine with Hadoop, organizations can now harness the value of Hadoop and the power of the HP Vertica Analytics Platform. HP Vertica for SQL on Hadoop simplifies data exploration, delivered in an economical way – all while running natively on an organization’s preferred Hadoop distribution and leveraging certification with leading visualization tools.

With HP Vertica for SQL on Hadoop, we’re combining the best of both worlds – the industry’s enterprise-proven HP Vertica Analytics Platform with the broadly accessible Hadoop ecosystem,” said Shilpa Lawande, GM Platform, HP Software Big Data Business Unit. “Now, organizations can store data in HP Vertica or any Hadoop distribution, explore data in place using HP Vertica for SQL for Hadoop, and serve the highest-performance analytic needs for mixed workloads with HP Vertica Enterprise.”

Distribution Agnostic and Built-in Integration for Superior Performance

HP Vertica for SQL on Hadoop is fully distribution agnostic. Users can perform fast data discovery on their Hadoop data lake and easily tap into the full power of HP Vertica Enterprise to experience the benefits of industry-leading analytic performance by leveraging built-in, seamless integration without changing a single line of existing SQL code.

As a result of the strategic engineering activity between Hortonworks and HP, we have delivered to customers optimal SQL-on-Hadoop performance and support for the HP Vertica solution on the Hortonworks Data Platform,” said Bob Page, vice president of partner product management, Hortonworks.

Comprehensive SQL Analytics for Intelligent Data Exploration

With HP Vertica for SQL on Hadoop, businesses can minimize switching costs and learning curves for users with the familiar ANSI SQL syntax. Unlike with many competitive SQL-on-Hadoop offerings, data analysts can continue to use their familiar BI/analytics tools that visualize and auto-generate ANSI SQL code to interact with a wide variety of Hadoop distributions. Moreover, users can tap into rich, built-in analytic functions that support JOINs, complex data types, and other capabilities only available in HP Vertica for SQL on Hadoop.

The industry-leading performance of the HP Vertica SQL-on-Hadoop solution is a perfect match for the enterprise-grade performance of the MapR platform, and we expect enthusiastic adoption among our growing joint customer base,” said Tomer Shiran, vice president, product management, MapR Technologies.
