Introduction to Docker

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Docker is an open platform for developers and sysadmins to build, ship, and run distributed applications, whether on laptops, data center VMs, or the cloud.. In the Twitter University presentation below, dotCloud founder and CTO Solomon Hykes demonstrates Docker, an open source project designed to easily create lightweight, portable, self-sufficient containers from any application. Docker is seeing much interest in the Hadoop and Spark community. At the recent Hadoop Summit, there was a lot of interest in Docker by leading companies such as BlueData, Altiscale, Hortonworks and others.

Common use cases for Docker include:

  • Automating the packaging and deployment of applications
  • Creation of lightweight, private PAAS environments
  • Automated testing and continuous integration/deployment
  • Deploying and scaling web apps, databases and backend services
