World Programming announced access to its free WPS Academic Edition for students and researchers at educational institutions throughout the world. The WPS Academic Edition software is available for workstation, server and mainframe, and the software comes fully featured with no limitation on dataset size.

This is an opportunity for academics to use the same fast, robust, industrial-strength analytics software run by many of the world’s most sophisticated industrial data scientists. The WPS analytics platform includes a SAS language compiler with integrated use of R and is ultimately scalable to petabytes of data with minimum compute resources required. This versatile platform enables users to perform almost any data-related task including data retrieval and merging, data preparation and aggregation, visualization, modelling and prediction, scoring and production analytics and presentation and publishing of results.

Students in all disciplines – not just mathematics and statistics – can benefit from powerful analytics capabilities. By offering the WPS Academic Edition at no charge, WPS will help students prepare for a career in data science when they will likely encounter the data programming languages of SAS and R used by many of the world’s largest businesses, governments and organizations.

We are offering our commercial-grade analytics software to students at no charge to support those that want to pursue an academic or industrial career in data science and analytics,” says Oliver Robinson, Director at World Programming. “Beyond educating and preparing students for future careers, we believe that academic researchers will benefit hugely from an industrial-strength tool to tackle the toughest data challenges.”

WPS software can be used to create and run SAS language programs and combining R language within SAS language programs. The SAS language is ideal for heavy-lifting data tasks – connecting to and preparing data from warehouses, Hadoop and other sources – and also crunching big, complex statistical and machine learning analyses. Being able to mix in the R language and all that the R ecosystem brings with it gives access to some of the latest experimental statistical methods. WPS will soon include the ability to mix in the Python programming language to further extend the flexibility and power available in one place.

The availability of the free WPS Academic Edition from World Programming provides a huge opportunity for any students looking for a career in data science or machine learning,” said Professor Anthony Finkelstein CBE FREng, University College London (UCL) and The Alan Turing Institute. “Universities will be able to use the heavyweight data analytics capabilities of the WPS platform for research, drawing on the different strengths of the various data processing languages including the languages of SAS and R.”
