Are You a Data Hoarder?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Our friends over at Veritas released the results of a global survey that dives into the world of IT “data hoarders.” Hoarding often triggers visions of clutter-filled apartments rather than someone storing video files on a corporate server. But as our culture becomes more digital and storage prices continue to drop, digital hoarding is becoming a huge problem for businesses and IT professionals alike.

The research, which surveyed 10,000 IT decision makers and office professionals worldwide, highlights the liability of data breaches and the associated business risks and costs of hoarding. It also touches on digital hoarding habits and their effects on the workplace. Among other things, the survey found:

  • 73% of respondents indicated they store data that could be potentially harmful to their organizations
  • 96% of IT decision makers admit to saving personal files to company storage
  • 86% think the amount of data their company stores would increase the time it takes to respond to a data breach
  • 46% of respondents would rather discard all of their clothes than get rid of their digital files

The infographic below, summarizes the results of the survey.
